Welcome New Members!

Hi there everyone! I'd like to start things off by saying thank you for your interest in the club! We are always looking for new and interesting members and are so excited that you are thinking about joining us.

So, just what can you expect when you join the BCC Anime Club? Well, you can expect to watch a lot of really good, interesting, silly, thought-provoking and in some cases, just plan weird, Anime. You also get access to our awesome Manga library, which contains at least one book from 32 different series (and a few complete ones). We have events, such as movie nights and group trips. We also go to Anime Conventions, including possibly going to Another Anime Con, up in Nashua, NH in November (anotheranimecon.com). We also have discussions about the shows we are watching.

Expect to make some new friends too! As you probably know, we anime fans tend to be pretty friendly and the members of this club are not exception.

It was so wonderful meeting you all at New Student Orientation and I can't wait to see you all Monday September 14 (we don't meet on Labor Day). We aren't sure what room we're going to be in, so keep checking this blog or our twitter account for updates.

Review: Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei!

Have you ever watched an anime and felt like you were on crack the whole time? That's Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei in a nutshell. That's not to say it's bad, just strange.

The Hollywood pitch for this would be something like "Crazy teacher teaches classroom of even crazier students". Everyone in this show is messed up in some way. The titular "Zetsubou Sensei", Nozomu Itoshiki, is constantly "in despair" and trying to off himself. Kefuka Fuura can only see things in a positive light. Meru is shy and quiet in person, but an abusive troll in email. And so on, and so forth.

The art style for the show is incredible, in my opinion. Something about the combination of the way it's drawn and the way it's colored just clicks for me. The characters do suffer a bit of "CLAMP Syndrome" in the way they're drawn, though, as everyone comes out skinny and lanky as hell, but it doesn't really hurt.

Just about the only excuse someone could have for not liking this show, though, is the humor. To say it's dark is like saying that the "something is to something as water is to wet" metaphor is overused. Beyond being just dark, it relies a lot on Japanese puns and sight gags. Although the fansubbers (it's yet to be licensed) did a good job of explaining them when they could, the humor still can come across as a little flat if you're not already an anime fan. Also, the characters tend to go overboard in exemplifying their crazyness. The previously mentioned Meru is mute except for a few whimpers in person, Kefuka sees Nozomu hanging himself and suggests that he was "just trying to become taller", etc. If you're not the kind for over the top humor and whacky zanyness, avoid SZS like the plauge. Otherwise, watch a few episodes.

Anime Deals/What I'm watching now

I thought I'd make a post for once and to start off I'd like to give some pointers on where to go buy anime DVDs. As we all know RightStuf is an awesome website and they tend to have decent sales as well. Right now they're having a VizMedia sale with 40% off most DVDs.

Also I wanted to notify everyone that MovieStop in the Fashion Crossing is having a sale starting February 16th they will have a boxset sale. Now how much off I don't really know yet, but they always have some nice sales too like buy 3 and get 4th used anime DVD free, or 40% off used anime DVDs. And they're pretty decent about the disc quality too.

Okay onward to my fansub heaven moment. For this anime season I've been watching A LOT: Kuroshitsuji, To Aru Majutsu No Index, Hetalia Axis Powers, and Clannad After Story. I'll go into each of these.

Kuroshitsuji is about a young count named Ciel Phantomhive who has a demon for a butler and works secretly for the Queen of England, saving her kingdom from many spirits and mythical creatures. This series is a lot like Cain Saga, so if there's anyone who likes a gothic look with their shows then this is a good one, but it's not always serious it has a lot of funny moments and likeable characters that make someone get attached easily to the show.

To Aru Majutsu No Index is about a lowly level 0 ESPer who finds a nun at his doorstep who holds 103,000 grimoires. He gets tangled up with her trying to save her from a magical society. This show is a lot like Shakugan no Shana, it's even animated by the same studio. So if you want something with a lot of action, character development, and comedy, did I mention a side of romance too?

Hetalia Axis Powers is if countries were actually people/chibis going through various world events. It's actually funny and based off a Japanese web comic. Each episode is also 5 mins long.

Clannad After Story is a continuation of the awesome moe-filled drama called Clannad. This season is based off a secret ending in the original game that only happens after every other ending is finished. I won't say anything else because if I did it would spoil for people who haven't seen the first season.
